It offers a diverse range of exhibits that appeals not only to farmers, but to past and present John Deere employees and non-Deere outsiders with an affinity for the history of agricultural production in Iowa. RKLA worked as part of a multi-disciplinary design team in the development of the museum campus, beginning with the initial master planning process and carrying through to the final design and implementation. A challenge for RKLA was to gracefully accommodate the grade transition from the parking lot to a lower main entrance. The site design utilizes a rich blend of pavers and ornamental grasses and stone organized into rows which tie the site to the building architecture and recall the agricultural theme of the museum. Monolithic curbs and contemporary lighting and site furniture complete the clean, high-tech look of the landscape. Many playgrounds are designed to accommodate special needs mainly through features on a large structure with ramps for wheelchair accessibility. Inclusive playgrounds are more than wheelchair accessible. Inclusive playgrounds provide open spaces that allow more imagination, invention and group interaction– more free play. This playground is also purposefully integrated into the landscape to evoke a natural and interactive play experience using natural materials, plants, grass berms and boulders. Each of the play features is located with sensitivity to activity and noise levels and allows adults to assist and participate with children at play. The Cedar River Plaza and Amphitheater includes a 2400 square foot performance area with stadium seating and a 10,000 square foot elevated plaza area. The Riverwalk Loop consists of new and existing recreational trails that serve as the final link in nearly 80 miles of recreational trails through the metropolitan area, and a connection with the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and Cedar Rapids. The downtown segments of the RiverLoop include an integrated network of bike paths and pedestrian walkways, scenic overlooks with interpretive signage, and enhanced features such as decorative paving, lighting, signing, shade structures, informational kiosks, and landscaping. The Cedar River Dam and adjacent river walls were rehabilitated and new inflatable gates on the dam allow an increase of the pool elevation behind the dam by approximately four feet to enhance recreational boating opportunities. Our office led the MCCB and the Grimes family into a successful venture by including them, along with the public, in an interactive master planning process. This plan focused on native vegetation restoration, management of the non-tillable acres, and creating inviting public facilities. A day spent in this “classroom” is coordinated by the public-school teachers assisted by guest instructors from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Marshall County Conservation Board. The 132 acres in this parcel consists of beautiful bluffs overlooking the scenic Iowa River valley, a 9.6-acre wetland, prairie, and woodland. The Hardin County Conservation Board received an Iowa D.O.T. Enhancement Grant in 2006 and hired our firm to develop the overlook into a showcase visitor destination and outdoor education facility. Features of the design include a raised overlook plaza for the outdoor classroom, a limestone and timber shelter structure, and a restroom building. These spaces and uses provide the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center with needed outdoor event space as well as other civic program uses such as farmers markets, auto shows, sports shows, one-on-one basketball tournaments, winter activities/sports shows, large agricultural equipment shows, military equipment shows, and festival event space such as music or art shows. Spaces complement a year-around indoor public market building in a building renovated as part of the project. Complementary streetscape renovations surrounding the Expo site were installed in conjunction with the $4.5 million Exposition Plaza development and the site serves as the visual front door and connection with the Waterloo Riverwalk. The design incorporates irrigated event lawns and vibrant brick plaza areas to hold events. Specialty lighting and banner features provide color and event signage while acting as sources of power throughout the site. Construction was completed in 2015 and the finished product provides a contemplative and reflective space for the thousands of students, faculty, parents, and community members who were impacted by Malcolm Price Laboratory School’s 129-year service to the University of Northern Iowa. The brick plaza space is bordered by limestone block seating and is set amid a grand lawn and bosque of formal tree plantings. The plaza is bisected by a commemorative wall that serves as a gateway in both time and space. The brick wall is faced on one side by the original limestone lintel that once topped the front entrance of the Laboratory School building. The back side of the lintel was finished and lettered to recognize the impact that the Laboratory School had on the UNI College of Education. The original cornerstone was installed on one corner of the wall and mirrored on the other side with a cornerstone signifying the origination of the UNI College of Education. The two faces of the recognition wall are thereby representative of the Lab School’s connection and role in serving the University’s overall educational mission. Bronze recognition plaques were placed on both sides of the wall and were fitted with QR codes that link visitors with historical information and donor recognition that can be continually updated at together multiple City staff, stakeholders, and community leaders in a public input process to create a space that would be multi-generational and work with many different user groups, all with their own set of unique needs. Lincoln Park had a history that had been lost over the years through multiple additions and changes, most notably a large fountain that had stopped functioning long ago. RKLA brought the historical feel back to the park which was originally platted like a courthouse square. The strong geometry of the original design was emphasized by widening the sidewalks and lining them with historical benches to accommodate seating and interaction among users and also allow vehicles to utilize the sidewalk during event set up or tear down. The textured dark gray concrete walks were jointed to look like large stone pavers with a layout careful to protect the many existing shade trees that have made the park so popular for public gatherings. A centrally located brick plaza space adds a touch of whimsy with a checkerboard paver inset and a musical dance chime feature. Deer Park had numerous existing features such as a visitor’s center with accessible parking, restrooms, and a park shelter with seating. The rest of the park, however, was in great need of transformation. We were hired to create a master plan for what is now known as Veterans Park, with the Veterans Memorial as its anchor. The memorial design is founded on a pentagon layout, with 5 branches of service recognized with granite markers and flag poles in each of the faces of the plaza. The plaza geometry is extended into the switchbacks of the walkway coming down the slope to the memorial, making the plaza fully accessible and creating opportunities for the addition of other monument features in the future. RITLAND+KUIPER Landscape Architects donated their services to provide the design and assist in the preparation of construction documents and construction administration of the development. The main feature of the renovated park is a memorial walkway to commemorate Waterloo’s veterans. The walkway terminates on the south with a memorial to the Unknown Soldier. The terminus on the north is a miniature scale Statue of Liberty. The focal point along the axis is a white marble civil war memorial fountain which has been restored by a retired mason. This renovated park is one of the largest visitor draws in downtown Waterloo, and it is literally packed with veterans and their relatives on Memorial Day. Improvements needed to account for increased traffic to new housing development in the area and access to the future Cedar Falls High School, which will be completed in 2024, while continuing to serve the McLeod Center and UNI Dome event traffic. Three separate roundabouts will provide safe and efficient traffic flow at various intersections and will provide recognition of the City of Cedar Falls, the Cedar Falls Community School District, and the University of Northern Iowa with monument signage features. The overall concept includes informal plantings of overstory trees on highway right-of-way on either side of the Central Business District approaches, with the design becoming more formal near the interface with downtown Waterloo. The focal point along the plaza is a recognition wall honoring the community leaders who led Waterloo through the many years of highway construction. The $1.5 million project includes nine post-tension concrete tennis courts (three lined for pickleball), court and site lighting, court fencing, site amenities, and sidewalks. The design required consideration of large existing oak trees and extensive grading in providing the preferred tennis court configuration while fitting seamlessly into the site with room for future expansion to a twelve court complex. New LED athletic sports lighting was provided to provide light levels on the courts that exceeded the standards set for competition play by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). To avoid nuisance to nearby residential homes, extra precaution was taken into design to have a sharp lighting cutoff. Additional pedestrian light poles were installed for new sidewalks on UNI’s campus that access the courts. The lighting system was provided with push-button controls to allow the public to turn the lights on for night time playing. The existing electrical system in a UNI campus building was extended to serve the new courts. An assessment of the overall aquatic facility needs in Waterloo revealed that the City could no longer justify two outdoor pool facilities as they had operated for the past 40 years. Faced with this reality, the City made the difficult decision to close one facility. Rather than allow this closure to signal disinvestment, the City prioritized reinvestment in Gates Park, transforming it into a vibrant and inclusive community hub. For some of the corridor, city right-of-way purchases created an opportunity for realignment of the roadway, thereby improving traffic safety and providing additional greenspace as a buffer for the highway. A design charrette process gathered input from corridor residents, neighborhood associations, business owners, and other stakeholders and served as a guide in the design of greenspace developments, lighting, furniture, bike path connections, specialty pavements, and artistic elements. Our firm was hired to provide design development, construction drawings, and construction related services for exterior site improvements including specialty paving and landscape design. Our site design seeks to treat the water quality volume on site through a series of perched water table biocells with soils and plantings engineered by RKLA. The integration of this technology in a traditional campus demonstrates that sustainability works in urban spaces. RITLAND+KUIPER Landscape Architects was responsible for the master plan that guided fourteen aggressive development years under the Bob Vogel administration. This plan shaped campus growth, locating several new buildings and features with its strength being the way in which buildings connect and relate to form strong campus spaces. Although different architects were involved in the building projects, the sense of whole is maintained by each building assuming its proper role in the overall plan and architectural character. The study and report was conducted and written by our office under a contract with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Legal consultants were provided by the National Park Service, other minor subcontractors were led by Craig Ritland, and volunteer work utilized to facilitate the expedient completion of the study. The result of this work is an extremely popular, mostly privately financed public recreation trail. It traverses four counties, following a route which carries it through the Cedar River bottom lands, along the forested banks of the river, and across rolling farmland. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC included a photograph of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail in its magazine shortly after its completion. The Cedar Valley Lakes Project vision was a major water-oriented greenbelt along the Cedar River capitalizing on opportunities created by these federally-financed highway construction projects. The preliminary highway plans would have resulted in a chain of pits along the roadside. The result of this initiative is a 15-mile, multijurisdictional, urban greenbelt. It features over 500 acres of new and existing highway borrow lakes connected through a 100-mile recreational trail network. RKLA provided master planning and detailed site design over a period of 10 years for the Cedar Valley Lakes Project Board, which was composed of private citizens, representatives from area parks, tourism interests, and city and county staff. The project has enhanced the economic climate in the area by adding hundreds of acres of urban forests, wetlands, restored prairies, and lakes to the local park systems. The master plan strategically identified these lands in order to consolidate several thousand acres of parkland in multiple jurisdictions. It features a unique combination of passive water-oriented recreation and a popular all terrain vehicle park on a site with a checkered past of unsupervised parties and a history of “anything goes”. Through public meetings of both neighborhood and regional citizens, the City of Waterloo and our office concluded that there was sufficient land and interest available to facilitate diverse uses in a compatible way. By accommodating and isolating all-terrain vehicle use along the Cedar River through fencing and physical distance, the developing recreation area is taking shape and becoming very popular. The historic uses of all-terrain vehicles, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors are now compatible activities as work continues on new access roads, boat ramps, parking and picnic areas, and a swimming beach. Waterloo has been particularly successful in realizing the historic renovation of Fourth Street storefronts. RKLA was responsible for a streetscape design that would complement the historic renovation of storefronts while maintaining a link of authenticity. The design incorporated modern unit pavers but of the same color as the rustic street bricks of the past. Fiveglobe light fixtures match those found in photographs of the area taken at the turn of the century. The honeylocust trees selected have an open branching habit that allows the renovated details of the buildings to be appreciated while softening the street’s character. Located on a Brownfield environmental site, and previously home to a deteriorated hotel, Grand Crossing is the winner of the 2018 Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award and the 2017 Housing Iowa Multifamily Housing Development Award. The development utilized several stormwater best management practices including permeable pavers, bioswales, and native plantings in meeting Iowa Green Streets Criteria 4.0. The site drains to several bioswales planted with sedges and native grasses to filter and infiltrate stormwater runoff into the existing sandy subsoils. The planting scheme uses a mix of locally adapted trees, shrubs and perennials to create seasonal interest and a buffer from the heavy traffic on adjacent Highway 63. Overall, the project encompassed approximately 60,000sf of new construction along with numerous back-fill renovation projects. The landscape was developed so that the views from interior spaces would feel connected to the natural world and a variety of colors, textures, and layers, while minimizing maintenance concerns for facility staff. A beautiful front entrance plaza and lawn welcomes visitors and patients with limestone block features and bands of pavers and plants that complement the building architecture while screening views of the parking lot from the outdoor seating area. Our firm was commissioned by the State Conservation Commission (now the Iowa Department of Natural Resources) to design a new master plan for the renovation and reconstruction of George Wyth Memorial State Park. This project was oriented toward providing up-to-date recreation facilities while preserving the natural resources of the site in an urban setting within the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metropolitan area. The project dictated a solution which combined intensive, lake-related, day-use facilities with passive recreation uses such as camping, hiking, and interpretation. Following the master plan’s implementation, the park went from one of the least to the most popular and heaviest used in the State’s entire system. The Cedar River and each of the four lakes in the park provide a mixture of passive and active water recreation activities. Our firm was hired by the Edgewood Economic Development office to create a phased master plan that would serve as a guide for future development. The master plan includes an athletic complex, aquatic center, residential development, community center, additional business lots, and expansive rodeo grounds with an equestrian center. We also provided preliminary cost estimates and a master plan graphic that has been used in their marketing and fundraising efforts. Phase I of the master plan, the Edgewood Athletic Complex (serving Edgewood-Colesburg High School), has been built and includes a new high school football stadium and track, two Little League baseball fields, a future baseball field, parking lots, a concession building, and press box building. Our firm partnered with Iowa State University Landscape Architecture Extension to lead a design charrette with the Hardin County Board of Supervisors to evaluate existing site features and develop potential landscape renovation alternatives for the site. The final plan grew out of a concept to simplify the plantings and circulation patterns around the building to emphasize and frame views of the beautiful courthouse building. Some shrubs provide foundation plantings while the rest of the site is composed of curved concrete walkways accented with ornamental trees and period lighting. A plaza at the main entrance includes a large granite map of the county framed with clay brick pavers, period benches, and lighting. Our firm was also hired by the City of Eldora to provide design services for complete renovation of the streetscape surrounding Courthouse Square. Miller Adult Learning Center, Center for the Arts, RiverLoop Expo, Public Library, and 4th Street entertainment district. The multi-year project was phased to align enhancement funding with street reconstruction schedules to maximize the impact of those funds. The Grundy County Conservation Board hired RKLA to create a master plan for the park, including the 40-acre lake and additional property that then became excess right-of-way for the highway. The master plan was then used by INRCOG and Grundy County to apply for what turned out to be a successful REAP grant for the property purchase from the Iowa DOT. The GCCB hired RKLA to provide detailed construction documents for the 61-site modern campground including site layout, grading, and coordination of power supplies to the campsites. The Master Plan has been implemented and the park has become the premier park in Grundy County, with hard-surfaced trails, an RV campground, fishing jetties and a public hunting area. The park is located on the northeast corner of Eldora bordered on the north by a restored prairie and oak savannah owned by the State of Iowa, the Iowa River and Pine Lake State Park on the east. The Foundation, along with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the City, worked with RKLA in planning and obtaining a REAP grant to help fund phase 1 improvements. Phase 1 (completed in 2016) consists of a new parking lot, interpretive signage, restored prairie, wetland, oak savannah planting and timber connected by a combination of both paved and soft trails. Phase 2 will include trail improvements, a wetland overlook deck, and boulder outdoor classroom. We provided construction documents and construction related services for the plants, irrigation system, and entrance signage. The landscape design includes native limestone boulders, ornamental grass, and native grass areas which provide a linkage to the prairie heritage of the site. A series of sculptured mounds with trees were used to effectively screen an adjacent major highway. RKLA assisted with grading design within the park creating hills and mounds to add height and interest. Lost Island consists of five realms that each have a distinct color palette, architecture, and theme that is part of a larger overall story. This created a unique design challenge for RKLA to create a cohesive palette of materials and plants for the entire park while also maintaining individual identities for each of the five realms. The result is a stunning mix of bold colors first experienced in the pavement design welcoming you into the park and each of the realms. Unique fencing styles, light fixtures, signage, building architecture, stamp patterns in the concrete, and pops of color are present as you explore the Tamariki, Udara, Awa, Yuta and Mura realms. The uniqueness of the realms is also shown in the plants chosen for that area based on their color, texture, size and even their ability to flutter in the breeze. The planting plan consisted of over 30,000 plants ranging from large spaded oak trees from local sources to sweeping swaths of shrubs and perennial plantings. The 90-acre park and 30-acre lake is surrounded and connected by acres of prairie grasses and short grass “no mow” areas to help reduce maintenance and to enhance the feeling of being in a lost world where native plantings are plentiful. Custom colored precast concrete stone weaves its way throughout each realm as a common thread that ties the Lost Island world together. This multi-jurisdictional project provides trail users the ability to learn about the history of the Cedar Valley through dozens of panels and kiosks along the Black Hawk County metropolitan trail system. Each panel depicts the area’s natural and human history with pictures and stories. Map panels and place making signage were included in the project to provide wayfinding throughout the trail network. One of the project goals was to create a connection between the nearby RiverLoop Expo Plaza and RiverLoop Amphitheater with a streetscape character compatible with historic downtown Waterloo and complimentary to the sophisticated repurposed building. RKLA developed an urban streetscape design for the 3rd Street connection that utilizes alternating bands of gray and tan colored concrete that tie into the color scheme of the RiverLoop projects. Streetscape furniture, pedestrian scale lighting, and new tree plantings complement the pattern created by the paving scheme. A raised planter with perennial grasses softens the ramped elevation change leading up to the main entrance. A unique and unexpected hops planting along the west wall of the building creates a sense of whimsy tying into the brewery theme. This program is a joint venture between the Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa State University, and Trees Forever. Many of the small community improvement projects we have been involved with have included a public input planning process called Community Visioning that encourages strategic thinking about potential landscape improvements. The central piece of this process is the development of conceptual plans that graphically illustrate the vision of community leaders and volunteers, often including transportation corridor improvements and open space studies. Examples of completed community projects include a park in Fairbanks, a restored firehouse retrofitted into a unique park shelter in Conrad, gateway signage and landscaping on Highway 3 in Shell Rock, and streetscape improvements in Colfax, Shellsburg, and Clermont. Iowa Designed by renowned architectural lighting artist, Rob Shakespeare, the Waterloo River Lights Experience comes to life at sunset. Colored light flows from plazas with lighted totem towers, across the canopy of the 4th Street bridge, and spills dramatically over the water cascading over the adjacent Cedar River dam. Inspired by the spirit of Waterloo and the beauty of the river, light bridges connect the two halves of the city in arrays of seasonal, holiday and special celebration colors. At the top of most hours, a colorful tribute to Veterans flourishes in red, white and blue, celebrating this segment of a larger Veterans Way corridor along 4th Street and connecting adjacent memorial parks. RITLAND+KUIPER was hired to assemble a multi-disciplinary team to assist Shakespeare Lighting and Design in the implementation of the artist’s vision. The team designed two curved, colored-concrete plazas on either end of the bridge that each host three light “totem” tower sculptures loaded with colored LED fixtures. These systems are combined with the bridge canopy lights with an innovative control system that can be operated and maintained remotely using web-based software. Grinnell Veterans Memorial Grinnell, Iowa Designed by Joe Tuggle Lacina and RITLAND+KUIPER, the Unfurling Flag Monument is designed to honor all who have served our nation in the defense of liberty, freedom and equality, especially those who heroically gave the ultimate sacrifice in that service. This stainless-steel monument will weigh around 17,000 pounds and rise 41 feet into the air. Its length when unfurled would be 118 feet, and it will contain approximately 200,000 perforations for passage of light. These perforations will be used to create the stars and stripes on the steel panels. Through this initiative, RITLAND+KUIPER worked with the community to identify key areas for improvement in both their aging Pool Park and City Park, highlighting outdated equipment, limited accessibility, and a lack of recreational programming as primary concerns. RKLA was hired to assist the City and Park Improvement Committee through the design and implementation process for improvements to both parks. City Park presented several challenges, including outdated and unsafe play equipment, a historic bandshell stage, and essential amenities like restrooms and picnic shelters—all disconnected from one another and separated by steeply sloping lawn areas. To address drainage issues, particularly water runoff affecting a neighboring property, the site was extensively regraded to accommodate a new playground area and an adjacent bioretention cell, designed to capture and treat most of the runoff from the park’s southeast area. An additional bioretention cell was also installed to manage any remaining drainage. New ADA accessible sidewalks now flow through the space and link all park features to the existing community sidewalk network and a Veterans memorial plaza.
